Do you have thick and full hair then suddenly you feel like every time you brush your hair you see it falling out slowly or quickly?

I know this is a bit upsetting, especially for women. Are you wondering why your hair falls out unexpectedly and desperately looking for how to prevent it? Let’s look at some facts about hair growth and possible root causes.

Our hair has a growth cycle of about two years before stopping and falling out, two months later.

So if your body tells more hairs than normal to stop growing two months later your hair will start to fall out at a more rapid rate. If you don’t have any family genetic issues and this starting to happen, it is most likely due to stress.

Telogen Effluvium is an excessive daily hair shedding, it occurs as a result of an internal imbalance or sort of upset if you will such as a nutritional deficiency, a severely stressful event, crash dieting, or some sort of illness.

Stress can come in many different forms.

There’s physical stress, emotional stress, and mental stress. Between all of these different types of stressors,  our body can’t tell the difference.  A specific cascade of events are going to occur due to any type of stress and oftentimes what I see is that we are under stress for a sustained level of time.  The sustained time period is key, as it can throw many things off in the body.

Stress may also trigger disruption of eating patterns and affect digestion, which can have negative effects on your hair.

So, if you think back to when your hair started falling out and think if you had a stressful event, did something happen that was unusual as hair loss due to stress tends to happen two or three months after the stress onset.

Some of the major stressors that we see oftentimes include a death in the family, divorce, some kind of trauma, or an illness

Iron overload or imbalance can cause more hair to fall out.

So with iron overload, this can affect the hair molecule. Sometimes when we measure iron on a blood test or even a hair test we see the iron is not where it needs to be.  Most of the time if it’s not in the optimal range,  the iron we have is not working properly in our body. When this happens our body lacks to make it the right amount of red blood cells and these cells carry oxygen via hemoglobin around the body and into the tissues which allows them to work properly.

Whenever our body is short of oxygen it begins to prioritize and supply it to the most vital organs to keep you alive rather than to your hair follicles as a result your hair follicles really can’t function optimally and eventually it’s going to lead to hair loss whether that’s temporary or maybe it’s long term.

A B / B12 vitamin deficiency works very similar to the way that iron works in how it affects your hair follicles.

It’s an essential nutrient in making red blood cells which carry oxygen to the hair follicles and if your hair follicles are not receiving the proper amount of blood supply, oxygen and nutrients it can affect the growth of new hair and possibly lead to the abnormal hair loss that you might be experiencing.

Also with stress, we burn more B vitamins at a greater rate and also it’s part of the cycle to produce more cortisol which is a stress hormone.

Hormones play a huge role in regulating hair growth.

Oestrogens which are female hormones are hair-friendly and they help to keep hair growth in place for the optimal length of time for that cycle.
Androgens which are male dominant hormones are not very hair friendly and they can shorten the hair growth cycle, and stress can raise androgen levels.

The thyroid gland helps to regulate the body’s metabolism by controlling the production of proteins and tissue use of oxygen so any thyroid imbalance can therefore affect hair follicles.

Let’s discuss some simple steps in how to reduce and become resilient to stress

Make sure you are on a quality multi-vitamin to help give you more of a foundation with your mineral and vitamin balance. You can even use organ meat as natures multivitamin!

Add in an Adrenal cocktail. When we’re under stress our adrenals are very taxed and this helps to stabilize three of the four main minerals (calcium, potassium, and sodium) that are burned through rapidly whenever we are under stress and which can help overall to balance other minerals and decrease some of this hair loss.

Decrease stress! This is huge when you think of correcting some of this cycle we get into.
