In a world where societal pressures and the pursuit of perfection often lead us down unhealthy paths, it’s essential to recognize that healing and transformation are possible. My guest Jess Hodge will take you through her journey from disordered eating to food freedom, ultimately leading to renewed fertility and holistic healing!

The Struggle with Disordered Eating

Jess first shares about a period of struggle with disordered eating. It’s a place many individuals find themselves in, often unknowingly. Disordered eating can manifest in various ways, but it’s fundamentally about seeking control through food choices, often driven by external influences. Jess, like many, succumbed to societal pressures and sought control through her eating habits.

The Path to Unhealthy Control

During her teenage years, Jess started using birth control pills as a part of what seemed like a casual trend among her peers. Little did she know that this decision would set her on a path of hormonal imbalance and disordered eating that would last for years. The combination of birth control, quitting collegiate sports, and struggling to find her identity triggered a need for control. To regain control over her life, she embarked on a journey of extreme exercise and caloric restriction. She became obsessed with being thin, and her journey led her down the dangerous path of disordered eating.

Discovering Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

As she continued down this path, she decided to start a family with her high school sweetheart, now her husband. However, when she went off birth control, her menstrual cycle never returned. This alarming discovery led her to seek medical advice, resulting in a diagnosis of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a common condition that can affect a woman’s menstrual cycle and fertility. The diagnosis left her feeling lost, believing that fertility treatments were her only hope.

The Fertility Treatment Route

With the diagnosis of PCOS, she began fertility treatments, taking medications like Letrozole and Provera to stimulate her menstrual cycle and ovulation. While these treatments ultimately led to the gift of two beautiful children, the journey was not without challenges and heartaches. A miscarriage was a painful reminder of the trials she had endured.

The Turning Point

After the birth of her second child, she began to question her body’s ability to function naturally. She felt a deep calling to reconnect with her body’s natural rhythms and regain her menstrual cycle. It was a pivotal moment in her journey, as she recognized that her body was made to heal and that it wasn’t broken!

Seeking Holistic Healing

With newfound determination, she reached out to a nutritional therapy practitioner named Kelsey Anderson, known for her expertise in women’s health. The wisdom she gained from Kelsey was simple yet profound. Within three months, she experienced a miraculous transformation – her menstrual cycle returned. This newfound cycle brought with it the possibility of conceiving naturally, which she did. There was another miscarriage, but on her second cycle after the loss, she conceived again naturally, resulting in her almost one-year-old child.

The Power of Knowledge and Empowerment

Her journey, though challenging, ultimately empowered her to embrace her cyclical nature. She went from knowing little about her menstrual cycle to proudly identifying as a cyclical woman. She realized the significance of understanding her cycle as a tool for assessing her health and well-being.

As a mother, she recognizes the importance of educating her daughters about their bodies and cycles, fostering a positive relationship with their feminine nature. She encourages all mothers to share this valuable knowledge with their daughters, debunking myths and instilling a sense of pride in their cyclical nature.

The Shift to Food Freedom

Her journey also involved a significant shift in her relationship with food. She transitioned from a restrictive, calorie-focused diet to embracing food freedom. She learned that nourishing her body with whole, nutrient-dense foods was more important than calorie counting and deprivation.

Today, Jess truly has joy around food and the freedom of nourishing her body. She no longer lets food control her life, and the shame that once plagued her has dissipated. Her journey is a testament to the fact that it’s possible to break free from the chains of disordered eating and rediscover the beauty of a healthy relationship with food and one’s body!
