This is a very special podcast episode for us. We feel strongly that being vulnerable in sharing about this topic will bring glory to the Lord and also inspire others to be honest about their struggles as well.
The Struggle with Control
I ( Kari) have been reflecting a lot on how control deeply affects our actions and decisions. When we peel back the layers of our behaviors, we often find a desire for control at the root. In Genesis, we see this with Eve in the Garden of Eden, where her desire for control leads her to eat the forbidden fruit. This desire to be in control, rather than letting God lead, is something we all struggle with. It’s innate in us as humans, and today, we’re going to unpack that a bit more.
Personal Stories of Control
Hannah’s Journey
Hannah shared her experience of growing up with a traumatic childhood, which led her to become self-sufficient and control her environment as a means of survival. This coping mechanism, though understandable, often made it challenging for her to release control and trust God. She beautifully reminded us that Christ died so we would no longer be controlled by ourselves or others but live for Him.

Jenn’s Experience
Jenn also shared her struggle with control stemming from feelings of unworthiness. She talked about trying to control her family and other aspects of her life when things didn’t go as planned. This false sense of control often led to more chaos rather than peace. Both Jen and Hannah highlighted how turning to God and renewing their minds with His truth helped them let go of their need to control.

The Impact of Control on Health
Control can manifest in various ways, especially in how we handle food and our bodies. Many women struggle with eating disorders as a form of control. Hannah shared her battle with an eating disorder during her senior year of college, a time when she was praised for her appearance and discipline, despite being very sick. Jenn also opened up about her struggle with binge eating, which was driven by perfectionism and shame.
Breaking Free from Control
- Bring It to Light: Both Jenn and Hannah emphasized the importance of bringing struggles into the light. The enemy thrives in secrecy, but healing begins when we share our burdens with others.
- Seek Help: Whether it’s disordered eating or another form of control, seeking help from others can be a powerful step towards healing. Professional help, support groups, or trusted friends and mentors can provide the guidance and support needed to overcome these challenges.
- Trust God: Ultimately, true freedom comes from trusting God with every aspect of our lives. Renewing our minds daily with His truth helps us release control and lean into His perfect plan for us.
Encouragement for the Journey
Healing is a journey, not a destination. It’s a process of learning to trust God more each day and letting go of our need to control. If you find yourself in a desperate place, know that God has you there for a reason. Reach out for help and trust that He will provide the support and guidance you need. We are here to walk this journey with you and help you see health differently – not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually.
We hope this conversation has encouraged you to reflect on areas of control in your life and inspired you to seek God’s help in letting go. Remember, you are not alone, and there is hope and healing in Christ.
