Why Does Everyone Seem to Have Autoimmune Disease Now?
Think about your circle for a second. Your sister, your coworker, your small group at church. Odds are, at least one of them is dealing with Hashimoto’s, celiac, or something else where the body has turned on itself.
That’s not your imagination. The numbers really have climbed — a lot — in just a few decades.
And here’s the thing: our genes didn’t change that fast. Genes take hundreds of years to shift. So if autoimmune conditions are exploding in 25 to 50 years, genetics can’t be the whole story.
Something Else Changed
Our food changed. Our sleep changed. Our stress changed.
Most of us used to eat out of a garden. Now, soil is depleted, crops aren’t rotated, and food is less nutrient-dense than it used to be — even when we’re eating “enough.” Overfed and undernourished at the same time.
Add in artificial light, screens in the bedroom, erratic sleep schedules, and a whole lot less time outside than our grandparents had. Sleep and recovery just aren’t what they used to be.
Your symptoms are signals—not failures.

The Bucket Gets Full
Here’s a picture that makes this easier to hold onto: think of your body like a bucket. Stress, poor sleep, nutrient gaps, environmental exposures — they all pour in.
For a while, the bucket can handle it. But eventually it overflows, and that’s when symptoms show up. Genes might determine the size of your bucket. They’re not usually what fills it.
Busy Isn’t Neutral
This one might sting a little: a packed schedule is a stressor too, even when every single thing on it is something you enjoy.
Saying yes to everything — the late nights, the skipped meals, the constantly-on calendar — adds up quietly. For a lot of women, learning to say no isn’t a lifestyle preference. It’s actually part of healing.
One Thing to Try Today
Look at your calendar for this week. Pick one thing that’s draining rather than filling you up, and let it go. Just one. That’s the whole ask.
You’re Allowed to Ask Deeper Questions
Genetics load the gun. Environment pulls the trigger. That doesn’t mean you’re powerless — it means there’s more here to explore than most appointments have time for.
We go deeper into all of this — including the harder conversations we don’t always see covered — in this week’s episode. Come listen when you have a few minutes to yourself.
